(New York, 8 September 2024)– The U.S. Open once again captivated the world, not just with record-breaking attendance and unforgettable matches, but by shining a global spotlight on health, wellness, and the power of sport to build communities. This year, the tournament embraced a new wave of awareness around well-being, reminding us that tennis is more than a game — it’s a path to a longer, healthier and happier life.
Record-Breaking Attendance and Engagement
This year’s tournament drew over 1 million fans to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center — an 8% increase from last year. Opening day alone saw a record 74,641 attendees, reaffirming the U.S. Open’s place as one of the most electrifying events in global sport.
Champions Are Born
Italy’s Jannik Sinner made history, defeating American Taylor Fritz in straight sets to become the first Italian man to win the U.S. Open. On the women’s side, Aryna Sabalenka battled past Jessica Pegula, clinching her third Grand Slam title. In men’s doubles, Australians Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson ended a28-year title drought, taking home their first major win as a team.
The Healthiest Sport on Earth
The 2024 U.S. Open spotlighted health, wellness and inclusion like never before. From expanded healthy food options on-site to wellness-focused fan experiences and community events, the U.S. Open continued to lead the way in integrating sport and health. Studies have shown that playing tennis can add an average of 9.7 years to one's life expectancy, underscoring the sport's role in promoting physical activity, social interaction, and long-term health. This commitment echoes growing global momentum around the UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being. In partnership with like-minded organizations, the U.S. Open promoted initiatives designed to make the game more accessible and inclusive, empowering individuals of all ages and backgrounds to pick up a racquet and play. This focus comes in line with WTA’s partnership with Hologic aimed to improve wellness and equality for women.
“At Motko, we see tennis as more than the healthiest sport — it’s a lifestyle, a movement, and a promise of what’s possible when health and joy go hand in hand,” said Kira Golenko, founder & CEO.
As the courts go quiet and the lights dim at Flushing Meadows, one message rings loud and clear: tennis is a game for life.
